This 4-week virtual short course gives you everything you need to turn your fashion ideas into professional, production-ready designs – that we will then get sampled and made! Whether you’re a student, a creative hobbyist, or starting your own label, you’ll learn the real steps behind designing, choosing the right fabric, and preparing your work for manufacturing — with a strong focus on sustainability throughout. This course focuses on dresses and through your choice of either one of your favourite dresses or a Freya Simonne best seller we will adjust in line with your inspiration to create a brand new version just for you.

  • Week 1: Dream It — Concept, Research & Visual Identity

    • Finding inspiration
    • Trend awareness vs. timeless design
    • Using research to build a collection concept
    • Assignment: Build a purpose-led mood board + concept statement
     

    Week 2: Design It — Sketching, Planning & Technical Prep

    • Translating mood boards into designs that work with your source piece
    • Understanding design details and garment construction with a focus on sustainable design practices
    • Adding rough measurements and communicating design intent
    • Assignment: Submit one completed sketch with basic spec notes
     

    Week 3: Source It — Fabric Fundamentals & Sustainable Sourcing

    • Fabric 101: the good, the bad and the ugly
    • Matching fabric to silhouette and purpose
    • Why fabric choice can make or break a sustainable design
    • Freya’s go to places for sourcing deadstock & vintage fabrics
    • Assignment: Choose your fabric & order it
     

    Week 4: Make It — Preparing for Production & What Happens Next

    • Reviewing design and fabric ensuring everything is ready to start the sampling process 
    • From sketch to sample: what to expect
    • Next steps once you have your sample
    • Freya will then start the process of getting your pattern and sample made
    • Assignment: wait 3-4 weeks for your piece to arrive
